TRACK RACING IN THE CAROLINA’S !
On October 11, 2010 the Rock Hill, SC city council approved the financing and release of funds to build the GIORDANA Velodrome in the up and coming Riverwalk community.
Final facility designs are still pending but it will be a 250 meter concrete velodrome with access via tunnel. Schurmann Architecture from Germany is the design firm. The build cost is approx. $ 4 mill. on land donated by the developer, The Greens of Rock Hill LLC. ( riverwalkcarolinas.com ).
The velodrome will be located next to a proposed YMCA and adjacent to retail amenities including restaurants. A Supercross BMX, national caliber cyclocross track, and dedicated criterium course will be built on nearby grounds in the development. The site has easy access from Interstate 77.
The timeline calls for the velodrome and a substantial portion of the other venues to be completed by Dec. 2011. The financing uses a Recovery Zone Facility Bond and New Markets Tax Credit Financing in addition to city and private funds.
Hats off to GIORDANA for stepping up with a major portion of the private funding for the naming rights. And congratulations to Spencer Leuders and Mike Cowan for their perseverance over the years to bring a velodrome to our area. Hopefully we can start some local events late next year.
Cycling Center Partners, the non-profit advisement board for the facility, still needs to raise $300,000 towards the private sector contribution required for the facility. Any interested parties can contact Spencer Leuders for advertising opportunities. Spencer can be contacted at lueders.spencer@gmail.com
